TPL Notary Info & Guidelines

The Thomasville Public Library offers the convenience of Notary Public services for a fee of $5 per signature notarized. The Notary witnesses the signing of a document or signing of a sworn statement on a document.

 

NOTE: Notary services are dependent on the Notary’s availability.  Notary hours are 9:30am - 4:00pm. Please call 334.636.5343 in advance to ensure availability and/or to schedule an appointment.

 

The Library Notary is simply witnessing the signing of a document and is only verifying the following:

1) that the signer of the document appeared before the Notary,

2) that the Notary positively identified the signer, and

3) the signer both acknowledged the signature as his/hers and that the signature was made willingly.

 

ITEMS NEEDED:

  • Bring a current/valid government issued photo ID for every person who will be signing the document. This requirement also applies to witnesses. Expired IDs cannot be accepted.

  • If there is more than one party signing a document, all parties must appear before the Notary at the same time in order for a notarization to be completed.

  • Bring the document requiring notarization, filled out in its entirety, with you. All blanks in a document must be filled in before notarization, with “N/A” if not applicable.

  • If your document requires witnesses, you are responsible for providing them.  A witness must (1) be personally known to you, (2) be willing to stand up in court on your behalf, (3) be at least 18 years of age, and (4) have a current/valid government issued photo ID. Witnesses may not be solicited from patrons in the library.

 

INFORMATION AND DETAILS:

  • Notary services are dependent on the Notary’s availability. Please call ahead.

  • You are not to sign any documents until the Notary is present.

  • Notaries may not copy and notarize Public Record documents. Some common examples of Public Record documents include: birth certificates, death certificates, marriage or divorce decrees, copies of deeds, mortgages or other Real Estate documents, probated wills, official school records and transcripts, immigration papers, military records, driver’s licenses, passports, certificates of citizenship, and Employment Eligibility Verification I-9 documents.

  • Certain documents are best handled by law offices or realtors; therefore, we do NOT notarize wills, codicils, living wills or trusts, documents of conveyance (transfer of title or deed), documents related to estate settlement, or depositions.

  • Notary Publics are prohibited from offering any kind of advice to the public, including on the format, wording, or content of any document to be notarized. Please consult with your attorney, real estate agent, or other legal professional if you have any questions before presenting a document for notarization. 

  • All documents to be notarized must be in English. Notaries are not permitted to make use of a translator to communicate with a Notary customer. Unfortunately, we do not have a Spanish-speaking notary, at this time.

  • Notaries will not provide service if the customer, document, or circumstance of the request for Notary Service raises any issue of authenticity, ambiguity, doubt, or uncertainty for the notary.

The Library’s notary may, at his/her sole discretion, decline to provide Notary Service.
